I have read much positive remarks about this unit but wanted to ask if this would be a good unit for my system. I wanted a DAC to use with my Rega Apollo cd player that would be a better one than the stock unit. It would be used with my Bryston B100 SST integrated amp. My concern was several comments about "low gain" from the DAC. Is this a concern with my setup? I didn't intend to use it as a preamp but maybe it would be better than the Bryston's pre? Thanks!

Hi rmcfee, I tried the NM24 in my system before and it's definitely not 'low gain' at all. I used it as a DAC/preamp connected directly to my amps and it had better gain than my Modwright LS100 preamp, which has a gain of 12db. As a stand alone DAC, the analog ouput had the same gain level as my HK HD990 CD player and I never had to turn the volume nob pass 11 o'clock. And my Monarchy SM70 PRO amp has less wattage than your Bryston (80W vs 100W into 8ohm). So I wouldn't worry about the gain. Hope that'd help

Hi, Not only does the NM24 provide enough gain to drive any power amp, it will drive any headphone to full blast. That's why we provided that headphone jack on it. By the way we also want to challenge any headphone user to compare the NM24, used as a headphone amp, to any other headphone amp on the market, on the basis of sound quality and value for money.

You can see the how Monarchy is at the center of my digital audio set-up. The new generation of the NM 24 is mind blowing compared to the older one, and the SM70 is a great match for my B&W CM1's. I would definitely use the NM 24 preamp, and to really add some sonic quality to your CD experience then you should consider the DIP Combo. The best audio experience for me is using the Monarchy system with my Mac mini and Amarra. Play some 24/96 audio and it will be hard to tell the difference between a digital and an analog system. Here are some hints on setting up a music server co-bw.com/Audio_OSX_Optimal_Audio.htm. I need to add some more info to the page, but what is there is enough to keep one busy. Note: I use OS X, but one could easily go with Windows if that is all one has. Finally, one mod that I did do to the NM 24 was to add some tube dampers. They helped significantly. I will post a page on how I built some for about $3 a piece, and they are just as good as the $50 ones. The AC cable I built for about $100 using Furutech components made a huge difference --the stock Apple AC cord is more of an antenna than a cable for the audiophile. To buy a comparable one would cost you about $300. In short, use everything available on the NM 24. It is of the highest quality all the way around.
